Digital Citizenship
A digital citizen understands the power and responsibility that comes with the use of technology. A digital citizen is one who knows what is right and wrong, shows intelligent, respectful technology behavior, and makes good choices when using technology.
Students must follow the six conditions of being a good digital citizen:
1. Respect Yourself. I will show respect for myself through my actions. I will select online names that are appropriate, I will consider the information and images that I post online. I will consider what personal information about my life, experiences, experimentation or relationships I post. I will not be obscene. 2. Protect Yourself. I will ensure that the information, images and materials I post online will not put me at risk. I will not publish my personal details, contact details or a schedule of my activities. I will report any attacks or inappropriate behavior directed at me. I will protect passwords, accounts and resources. 3. Respect Others. I will show respect to others. I will not use electronic mediums to antagonize, bully, harass or stalk other people. I will show respect for other people in my choice of websites, I will not visit sites that are degrading, pornographic, racist or inappropriate. I will not abuse my rights of access and I will not enter other people's private spaces or areas. 4. Protect Others. I will protect others by reporting abuse, not forwarding inappropriate materials or communications; I will moderate unacceptable materials and conversations, and not visiting sites that are degrading, pornographic, racist or inappropriate. 5. Respect Intellectual Property. I will request permission to use resources. I will suitably cite any and all use of websites, books, media etc. I will acknowledge all primary sources. I will validate information. I will use and abide by the fair use rules. 6. Protect Intellectual Property. I will request to use the software and media others produce. I will use free and open source alternatives rather than pirating software. I will purchase, license and register all software. I will purchase my music and media, and refrain from distributing these in a manner that violates their licenses. I will act with integrity. |

Basic Cyber Safety Parenting Tips
1. Make sure your child doesn't spend all of his/her time on the computer. People, not computers, should be their best friends and companions. 2. Keep the computer in a common space like the family room or kitchen, not in your child’s bedroom. 3. Learn enough about computers so you can enjoy them together with your kids. 4. Teach them never to meet an online friend offline unless you are with them. 5. Watch your children when they’re online and see where they go. 6. Make sure that your children feel comfortable coming to you with questions and don’t over react if things go wrong. 7. Keep kids out of chat rooms or open internet text sites unless they are monitored. 8. Encourage discussions between you and your child about what they enjoy online. 9. Discuss these rules, get your children to agree to adhere to them, and post them near the computer as a reminder. 10. Teach them what information they can share with others online and what they can’t (like telephone numbers, address, their full name and school). 11. Get to know their “online friends” just as you get to know their personal friends. 12. Warn them that people may not be what they seem to be and that people they chat with are not their friends, they are just people they chat with. http://www.cyber-safety.com/pdf/rules.pdf |
